Dear friends and family,

Can you envision a land where hope is barely a distant thought? A place where a simple necessity, like clean water, is considered a luxury. A place where desperation, alcoholism, addiction and depression rule lives? That land you just envisioned, is a real place.“Soweto” (So-Weight-O) is a large slum of 6,500+ people located outside of Jinja, Uganda (Africa). Most of these people have been displaced due to the violence in Northern Uganda led by Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Although most of the violence has stopped for some years, refugees seeking safety are now living among piles of trash. The conditions in Soweto are deplorable and there is great need for the quality of life to improve. Not only does Soweto not have clean, running water; but many of these refugees have birthed children, that are now running the streets of Jinja and its neighboring slums. This rising epidemic of street children, many of which have deceased parents, or come from extremely abusive and neglectful homes; is absolutely heartbreaking. The population of street children grows larger every day, and so do the high risk behaviors that they take part in. Alcoholism, addictions, diseases, self-harm, malnutrition, are a reality of their daily lives. Hope is something that many of them know nothing of. In Uganda, many are perishing for a lack of knowledge.

In August 2017, I returned from a 2 month long mission trip, to Jinja, Uganda. While there, I led worship at several churches and led all night worship nights in several villages throughout Uganda. I also spoke the Gospel, and worked with street children in Jinja and the surrounding villages. God has opened up a lot of doors for me to return to Uganda in the future. I'm so excited about these opportunities that God is giving me to reach some of the most hopeless places, and broken hearts, and show them His love! I am humbled that He is able to use me in such a real way, for such a time as this! I believe that we will see Him move mightily during my time there, and that many lives will be changed. During my trips to Uganda, I will be doing the following:

Facilitating leadership development workshops for the CRO (Child Restoration Outreach) staff; and working with the street children, there.

Every chance I get, I minister hope to the residents of Soweto; disciplining the women and children, and leading worship at several Jinja area churches. (True Worship Center~Jinja, and Bride of Christ Church~Soweto to name a couple.)

I've also been training the worship team for a new church in Mbale, Uganda~that has just recently opened it's doors.

Mbale is about 3 1/2 hours from Jinja, so I spend at least 2 weeks there, during each trip. Mbale is a much different experience. I stay with a pastor and his family, in the village. There is no electricity, or running water. On my last trip I even got to speak at church that meets under a mango tree (check out the pictures below!)

On every trip, Laura and her team volunteer with the Street Children of Jinja, at CRO.

The Village of Soweto

Soweto is a slum of 6500+ refugees, just outside of Jinja, Uganda. Laura and her team spend a good portion of their time in Jinja, ministering to the beautiful residents of Soweto.

In addition to all of these amazing things, God has led me to start a new project that I am super excited about! I am currently in planning with my Ugandan team, to build a new nursery and primary school for children of alcoholics, addicts, and child/single parents. While the children are attending the school, we will get sponsorships for them ( we are currently looking into partnering with Compassion International for this) ; for food, medical treatment, clothing, and school fees. But this project doesn't stop there. While the children are receiving these sponsorships, the parents will be required to go through our rehabilitation program. This program will help them find freedom from their addictions, and teach them skills, so that they can eventually give back to their own communities and support their own children. We are currently raising fund for this project, as well.

Since I returned to the U.S. at the end of August 2017, the number of children has gone from 120, to 170. And there are still over 200 children who are not able to attend the school due to lack of space. In addition, the straw structure that you see in one of the photos, is a school in another village, that we plan to build in the future.

Adventures in Mbale, Uganda

For two weeks out of last summer's to month trip, Laura spent time in Mbale, Uganda (about 3 and a half hours away from Jinja) with the amazing Odongo family. During her time in Mbale, she had the privilege of training the worship team at All Christians Fellowship Mission, visiting the Odongo's relatives in Palisa,Uganda, and even got to spend some time at Uganda Christian University.

Beauty for Ashes Worship Team/ Worship Nights

(In addition to all of the projects above; the Beauty for Ashes team is doing some amazing things in the highways, byways, and remote villages of Uganda. During the Summer 2018 trip, the Beauty for Ashes Worship Team was able to do several all night worship nights; in the village of Butamira, at Mpumudde High School in Jinja, Uganda, and at Evangel church in Soweto. Events also included regular worship experiences at True Worship Center~JInja, several worship experiences inside of of Bidico (the largest factor in Jinja), and other churches and several villages, and multiple worship experiences and a conference at Evangel Church~Soweto. The total of the all these experiences resulted in hundreds of salvations ,healings, and deliverances. Each future team will be able to come use their gifts and talents to further God's Kingdom in Uganda, through events just like these.
